SPS University: Mental Health provides supports for navigating mental health in children

panel

On Nov. 7, Springfield Public Schools (SPS) welcomed students, families and community members to SPS University: Mental Health at Kickapoo High School. Designed for caretakers, the event provide support and strategies for those supporting their child's mental health. Mental health was a major focus of the evening, underscoring SPS’s dedication to addressing one of the most urgent issues impacting students today.

"Mental health is now one of the most urgent concerns affecting our youth," said Dr. Lathan. "According to the CDC, rates of mental health challenges among youth people have increased dramatically in recent years. But what's more concerning that nearly 50 percent of these young people do not receive the help they need. This gap in support can have lasting effectings on their academic achievement, relationships and overall quality of life. Tonight, we are here together to make a difference."

In a panel discussion led by experts from local mental health organizations, attendees learned about challenges facing young people, from heightened rates of anxiety and depression to the influence of social media. Panelists, including professionals from CoxHealth, Burrell Behavioral Health, the Arc of the Ozarks and Mercy, shared insights on recognizing signs of mental distress, fostering open communication and building supportive home and school environments.

Following the panel, Dr. Lathan emphasized SPS’s commitment to a collaborative approach, inviting families, educators and community members to work together in supporting student mental health and well-being. The evening concluded with breakout sessions, offering attendees a variety of workshops to receive strategic support on healthy relationships, preventing suicide, online safety and more.

SPS University is one of the ways that Springfield Public Schools supports a Collaborative Culture, as key priority as part of its Strategic Plan.
